Volume 11, Number 7                                                                 April/May 2010

From the Prez

The end of the school year is at hand. What a year it has been! Our students have accomplished great things and we had fun along the way also!

At the BBOB meeting on April 5th, the following officers were elected:

President – Daniel Lea

Vice President – Deaven Culver

Vice President Ways and Means – Diana Brewer

Vice President Standing Committees – Dena Divelbiss

Secretary – Saundra Davidson

Treasurer – Glenn Swanson

Assistant Treasurer – Jeanette Miller

We appreciate these parents who are supporting the instrumental music program with their time and talents.  However, there are many other positions that are just as critical.  There are plenty of opportunities to be a part of this organization and keep it strong: from chaperones for the football games, contests and trips, to uniform check-out, to concession stand volunteers. We need each of you to be involved so that we provide the best environment possible for our kids. Please contact one of the newly elected officers, this year’s current officers or myself!  Please don't stand on the sidelines watching the parade go by - get involved!

We are excited to have a Concession Stand Chairman for next year: Doug Fjare (fjare@msn.com).  For those of you who have volunteered to help with different aspects of concessions, make note of his contact information.

Someone interested in learning the ropes of Newsletter Editor may want to work with Paula Barnes next school year, as that will be her last year.

We will not have a BBOB meeting in May except for the budget meeting scheduled for May 19th.  If you have budget concerns or requests please contact Dan Lea or Glenn Swanson.

A special word of thanks to this year’s officers, volunteers, and parents who have spent countless hours working to ensure our success.  Great job!!   It’s been my honor and privilege to serve as your President.

Dan Gilliam

Band News

The High School Wind Symphony performed at the OSSAA State Concert Band & Sight-Reading Contest held at Jenks HS on Friday, April 16th and did great earning a Sweepstakes Award. This is the first OSSAA Sweepstakes the HS Band Program has earned in 6 years. The Wind Symphony earned a Superior Rating on stage during the concert portion of the contest and in Sight-Reading. These two sets of Superior Ratings plus the Superior Rating they earned at the OSSAA Regional Marching Contest last fall is what is required for a band program to earn the coveted Sweepstakes.

Additionally, both the High School and Mid-High bands competed in the Dixie Classic Music Festival in Chicago, IL on Saturday, April 10th where they earned Superior Ratings. The Mid-High band received a Judge’s Award for outstanding percussion section. The High School band received a Judge’s Award for outstanding woodwind section and an overall score of 97.5 out of 100. They were barely edged out of winning the entire festival by a band from New York who earned a 98.

What makes all the contest success even sweeter is that we just recently learned that we are being awarded the OSSAA Distinguished Academic Achievement Award for the group earning a combined (9th-12th grade) GPA of 3.665 last semester! This is a huge accomplishment with the number of students we have and with the amount of time that marching band takes!!

Thank you to everyone for your support and hard work!

Mr. Claussen

Dear Parents & other instrumental music supporters,

As you know, Oklahoma is currently in an educational funding crisis. Our school district has been and continues to be proactive to protect our students and the services and experiences they are offered.

One area that we could use some assistance with is transportation. If you or someone you know has a background with a commercial driver’s license or has an interest, our school district is willing to cover the cost of the background check and yearly physical. Additionally, anyone who drives for the district (paid or volunteer) is fully covered by the district’s liability insurance.

If this sounds interesting to you but you are not in a position to volunteer and would prefer to be paid for your services that option certainly exists as well. You could either become a regular “as needed” driver for the district or you could select which types of trips you would be willing to drive for. Our transportation department provides extensive training to anyone who needs to take the special driving test required. This is a great time to consider this possibility, as our transportation department can spend some time with you this summer helping you prepare before you go take the official test.

If this sounds interesting to you or you have further questions, please feel free to contact me. Thank you for all you do to support fine arts for the students of Bartlesville!

P.S. If this is not your “cup of tea”, we certainly have many other needs, both financial and physical, and we will welcome any assistance you are willing to offer.

Alex Claussen
